WONDR Experience in Amsterdam Noord is the one you walk through: fourteen interactive rooms across 1,500 m², each a separate world you enter with your whole body, designed by local artists and designers. It is at Meeuwenlaan 88, one metro stop from Central Station, and it is entirely indoors.
The word immersive gets used for anything with a projector. Here it means something narrower: you are inside the piece, and the piece changes because you are in it. A ball pit does not work without you in it.
What does “interactive” mean at WONDR?
Every room asks you to do something. Sink into the ball pit, which the venue describes as the largest in Europe. Float in a marshmallow pool. Stand under a confetti shower that someone triggers for you. Sing in a glitter karaoke booth. Walk into a kaleidoscope of lights. Bounce in a pink inflatable castle. There is nothing to look at from a distance, and nothing to read.
Who made the rooms?
Each installation was developed by a team of local artists and designers, according to WONDR. The rooms are not licensed art reproduced on screens. They are physical builds made for this building.
How long does it take?
About 90 minutes at a normal pace, and there is no time limit inside. The route is self-guided. Hosts are present in the rooms to help and to take photos.
Is there a second immersive experience nearby?
In the same building. Barbie: The Dream Experience is twelve interactive zones across more than 2,000 m², including a life-size DreamHouse and a rocket you can enter. Some zones have dynamic lights, flashing effects and loud music. A visit takes about 90 minutes.
Does it work for adults?
It was built for adults of all ages. The sensory load is high, in colour and often in sound, which is the appeal for most people and the reason to skip it for a few.
