Amsterdam with children and teenagers: what works by age

WONDR Experience in Amsterdam Noord works from toddlers to teenagers because nobody is asked to be quiet, look without touching, or read anything. Fourteen interactive rooms, a ball pit the venue describes as the largest in Europe, a marshmallow pool and the SpongeBob Special, all included in one ticket at Meeuwenlaan 88, one metro stop from Central Station.

The question families ask is not whether children will like it. It is whether the adults will. The rooms are built for adults of all ages first, so the answer tends to be yes.

Does it work with a four to six year old?

Yes. Families with children of four and six are among the reviewers on the venue’s own pages. The marshmallow pool and the ball pit are the rooms that land hardest at this age. There is free stroller storage at the entrance and the rooms are kid-safe. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Does it work with an eight to eleven year old?

This is the sweet spot. Children at this age move through the rooms on their own terms while the adults follow. The SpongeBob Special, a set of SpongeBob themed rooms, is a favourite in this range and is included with every regular ticket.

Does it work with teenagers who say museums are boring?

Yes, and this is where it beats the alternatives. There is nothing to be bored by: a confetti shower, glitter karaoke booths, a kaleidoscope of lights. Teenagers photograph everything and hosts will take group shots. It is one of the few places where a fourteen year old and a parent do the same thing at the same time without negotiation.

What about Barbie: The Dream Experience?

It is in the same building and has its own age rules. Up to ten years old, one adult for every two children. From eleven to thirteen, at least one adult per group. From fourteen, independent entry. A visit takes about 90 minutes. Some rooms have dynamic lights, flashing effects and loud music, which matters for sensitive children. Strollers are stored free at the entrance and are not allowed inside.

How long does it take with children?

About 90 minutes at WONDR, and there is no time limit if they want to stay in the ball pit. The Galaxy Café inside is the break point. Pink Beach on the same site is the meal at the end, with gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and halal options.
