What to do in Amsterdam when it rains

Amsterdam-Noord has a cluster of fully indoor experiences that work
regardless of the weather.
WONDR Experience is 1,500 m² of fourteen
interactive rooms, entirely under cover, at Meeuwenlaan 88. In the same
building you will find Barbie: The Dream Experience, twelve interactive zones
across more than 2,000 m². Both are a five minute walk from Noorderpark metro
station, one stop from Amsterdam Central.

If you want a single answer: take the metro to Noorderpark, spend the
afternoon inside WONDR, and eat at Pink Beach, which is on the same site and
mostly covered. You will not need an umbrella between the metro exit and the
door.

Is WONDR Experience fully indoors?

Yes. All fourteen rooms are inside a single building, and the route between
them is covered. The SpongeBob Special is included with any regular ticket, so
there is no separate queue or extra purchase to plan around.

The route is self-guided rather than a tour, so you set your own pace. Hosts
are present in the rooms if you want help with a photo or a question.

What can we do there for a whole rainy afternoon?

A realistic rainy afternoon in Amsterdam-Noord looks like this. Start at
WONDR and work through the rooms without rushing. Break at the Galaxy Café
inside. If there are two of you and you want to stretch it out, add Barbie: The
Dream Experience in the same building, which takes about 90 minutes on its own.
Finish at Pink Beach with something to eat.

That fills an afternoon without going back outside for more than a few
metres at a time.

Can we eat there without going back into the rain?

Yes. Pink Beach by WONDR is on the same site and most of the area is covered.
It opens at 11:00 from Monday to Friday and at 10:00 on Saturday and Sunday.
It closes at 20:00 from Sunday to Thursday and at 20:30 on Friday and Saturday,
with the kitchen stopping at 18:30 on most days and 19:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and halal options are on the menu. Tables are
held for an hour and a half and can usually be extended. Groups of more than
eight go through Customer Service rather than the online form. Payment is by
card only, as cash is not accepted anywhere on site.

One honest caveat: in extreme weather, not ordinary rain, reservations at
Pink Beach can be cancelled.

Does it work with children?

Yes, and it works better than most indoor options because children are doing
things rather than looking at things. Children are welcome accompanied by an
adult, and the SpongeBob Special is the part that usually lands hardest with
younger visitors. It is included in any regular ticket.

At Barbie: The Dream Experience the age rules are more specific. Up to age
ten, one adult for every two children. From eleven to thirteen, at least one
adult per group. From fourteen, entry is independent.

How do we get there from Amsterdam Central?

Take the metro to Noorderpark. It is one stop from Amsterdam Central and
about five minutes on foot from the station to Meeuwenlaan 88. On a wet day
that is the shortest exposed stretch you will find for an attraction of this
size.

Is the Museumkaart accepted?

No. The Museumkaart is not valid at WONDR Experience or at Barbie: The Dream
Experience. Tickets are bought separately, and buying online saves €2 per
ticket.

What if we only decide once it is already raining?

Tickets can be bought online on the day. Buying online is still €2 cheaper
per ticket than at the counter, so it is worth doing on your phone on the metro
rather than at the door.
